Cambodia introduction

In 2003 we travelled from Amsterdam to Cambodia via Singapore and Bangkok. From Bangkok we reached Siem Reap by train and car, then continued through the country to the coastal town of Sihanoukville, before returning home via Bangkok. It was a complex itinerary and a rewarding one.

All photographs from this trip were taken on film. To give the collection a clear narrative, I asked Cees Mutsaerts to curate it. He selected images that capture the essence of the journey: Cambodia's varied landscapes, the people we met along the way, and the moments that stayed with us.

His selection balances the temples of Angkor with everyday street and country life, showing the country both as a travel destination and as a place where people go about their daily lives.

This page offers an overview of Cambodia as we experienced it in 2003 and serves as the starting point for the other sets.
