Easter procession

As Easter descended upon Costa Rica, we found ourselves drawn to the San Antonio de Belén Semana Santa procession. Thanks to our guide's simple introduction—"a Dutch photographer is here to document your celebration"—those few words opened doors and crowds, allowing my lens unprecedented access to one of Christianity's most moving reenactments.

Each participant breathed new life into their roles, their faces filled with emotions that transcended mere performance. Roman soldiers marched through streets lined with reverent onlookers while Jesus bore his cross. Local performers didn't just act out their parts, they lived them, and the boundary between performance and genuine spiritual experience blurred in the humid Costa Rican air.

This collection captures a community's collective moment of faith and tradition: the trembling hands clutching rosaries, the fierce determination in the eyes of those portraying biblical figures, and the electric atmosphere that transformed a small Costa Rican town into ancient Jerusalem for one remarkable afternoon.
