Cambodia

Cambodia is another rewarding destination in Southeast Asia. We first visited in 2003 and returned in 2024 and the contrast between the two trips is striking.

The country's history is complex. The Khmer Empire dominated the region for centuries and left behind Angkor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 1970s the Pol Pot regime brought immense suffering, a period Cambodia continues to process. Today the country is building toward a modern future. Phnom Penh's skyline is changing fast, although many of its new high-rises are still waiting for occupants.

Travelling Cambodia in 2003 and 2024 felt like two different worlds. Progress is visible almost everywhere, mostly for the better, though in places time seems to have stood still. One thing hasn't changed: Cambodia is full of photographic opportunities, from temples and markets to river life and street scenes.

This section brings together several picture sets. "Impressions" is a selection from 2003, and the other pages focus on themes I photographed in 2024.
